Rachel Medina
Rachel Medina, senior at United Township and cocaptain of the girls’ basketball team, knows her game. She has been playing basketball since her pre-school days, following in the footsteps of an older brother and sister and being coached by her dad.
Rachel has grown into quite a leader both on and off the court. Coach Scott Harding stated, “Rachel is a phenomenal leader. She has a mental intensity that is contagious, and she is able to bring intangibles to the court. We want our leaders to have that!”
Off the court, Rachel wears many other hats. She carries the title of president of the senior class, is a member of student council, Interact Club (a community volunteer program), and is president of the Letterman’s Club. She maintains a 3.8 GPA and is enrolled mostly in advanced placement classes. Rachel said, “The important thing to me is academics. After high school, I’d like to pursue a degree in Architecture or Design.”
David Johnson
Not even a broken jaw can stop David Johnson from playing basketball. The Rock Island senior, who has been playing since he was about five years old, injured himself while diving for the ball in a game. It’s made playing on the court a bit more difficult this season.
“Breathing has been difficult,” Johnson admitted.
While his injury has limited his playing time, he has kept up the team’s morale with his leadership skills.
“I just try to go out there and lead a good example for the younger guys,” Johnson said.
Johnson, who is a tri-captain this year, has always enjoyed being part of a team. He also feels that there is a great group of guys out this season. Unfortunately, the Rock Island team has had a rough start to their season so far. The team is hoping to improve their record and is keeping up the momentum during practices.
“If we keep working hard, it’ll pay off down the road,” Johnson said. Spoken like a true leader.
